  4. Left click or tap on the “regedit” icon that shows up after the search.
  5. Left click or tap on the “Yes” button if a pop up with user account controls shows.
  6. In the Registry Editor window on the left side panel you will need to left click or tap on the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” folder to open it.
  7. In the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” folder left click or tap on the “System” folder.
  8. In the “System” folder left click or tap on the “CurrentControlSet” folder.
  9. In the “CurrentControlSet” folder left click or tap on the “Control” folder.
  10. In the “Control” folder left click or tap on the “Class” folder.
  11. In the “Class” folder left click or tap on the “{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}” folder.
  12. Now on the right side panel look for “UpperFilters”
  13. Right click or hold tap on “UpperFilters”
  14. From the menu that pops up left click or tap on “Delete” feature.
  15. Left click or tap on the “Yes” button in the next window to confirm the deletion.
  16. Now do the same for the “LowerFilters” feature and delete it.
  17. Close the “Registry Editor” window.
  18. Reboot your Windows 8.1 operating system.
  19. After the device has rebooted please check if your DVD discs are working for you now.

Second method:

  1. Open your CD/DVD like you do when you want to place a CD or DVD inside.
  2. You will have there a laser head and you will need to clean the area around it.
Note: It is very important to clean the area around the laser head with a very clean dry material and it is also recommended to clean it with what you use to clean your monitor or with the material you use to clean any kind of eyeglasses.
  3. After you finished cleaning insert the CD/DVD bay back in.
  4. Reboot your Windows 8.1 operating system.
  5. After the device is up and running again eject your CD/DVD bay and insert a DVD in it.
  6. Check and see if you still have issues reading it.

Third method:

  1. If you are only trying to read a single DVD please try with multiple ones.
  2. The DVD you are trying to read might be damaged as well and we will need to check if there is an issue with a specific DVD or the drive itself.
  3. Also if you have a third party burning software that you use you will need to close it or uninstall the software for the duration of this step.
  4. After you uninstalled the software please reboot your Windows 8.1 device.
  5. When the Windows 8.1 device starts place a DVD in the drive and check to see if it can read it.
