USB not working on HP Envy laptops? Here’s how to fix this issue

However, for users with multiple devices, the USB port is one of the most important parts of any computer or laptop. So if it is not working, it definitely spoils the party.

How to fix HP Envy USB ports not working

Solution 1: Reboot your computer

This is one of the first solutions you can try if you experience the USB not working issue on your HP Envy laptop. Here’s what to do before you reboot:

  • Unplug all USB devices from your laptop
  • Shut down the laptop
  • Remove the battery and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes
  • Reboot your laptop
  • Plug back your peripherals

If this doesn’t solve the problem, go to solution 2.

Solution 2: Uninstall all items listed on USB controllers list

Here’s how to do this:

  • Right click Start button
  • Select Device Manager
  • Click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list
  • Remove any USB devices and memory cards plugged into your laptop
  • Disconnect any devices before uninstalling
  • Right click on each item to uninstall
  • Reboot your laptop
  • Insert USB device

Solution 3: Check Device Manager for warning signs

Sometimes when an old USB drive is inserted, it tends to install a property driver for the particular port it has been plugged into. This can be detrimental to the port itself.

Here’s what you can do in this case:

  • Right click Start button
  • Select Device Manager
  • Click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list
  • See whether there are any ports or hubs with either a yellow exclamation mark, red triangle, question mark, down-arrow mark, or an error notification or code.
  • If the driver has a yellow exclamation mark on it, double click on it then open Properties
  • Under Drivers tab, check the driver number and date to ensure they are similar

Solution 4: Check for Windows Update and update drivers

Sometimes you need to update your current version of Windows so that it can work with the kind of ports on your laptop. In this case, you can first check for any pending Windows updates, then approve where necessary.

Follow these steps to update your drivers:

If this is the case, do the following:

  • Right click Start button
  • Select Device Manager
  • Click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list
  • See whether there are any devices with either a yellow exclamation mark, question mark, down-arrow mark, or an error notification or code.
  • If the driver has a yellow exclamation mark on it, double click on it then open Properties
  • Under Drivers tab, choose Update Driver

Windows will find the appropriate driver for your external USB drive.
