You can now download WebView2 SDK for Edge to build hybrid apps

Microsoft recently released WebView2 SDK for Windows application developers. They can use it to update their Windows 10 apps with new web content.

At the moment, the new SDK lacks support for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2 and others. The support is further limited to some Win32 C++ APIs.

But Microsoft promised to extend the release of WebView2 SDK to other platforms in the future.

Microsoft received some useful user feedback from the previously released preview version. The company decided to implement new features in this SDK based on user feedback.

As a matter of fact, users can run WebView (32-bit version) on 64-bit systems. Some other features are “the ability to disable the dev tools and status bar”.

Microsoft understands there are many developers who will not adopt WebView 2. It is because WebView 2 is based on new Microsoft Edge and web standards.

There are some functionalities that are available in WebView but not in the newer version. Microsoft wants to improve the existing capabilities of WebView 2 in the future.

WebView2 is by default powered by the always up-to-date Microsoft Edge, so you can build your web content against the latest and most secure platform without worrying about fragmentation across Windows versions, or across your web content running in the browser and in your app.

The Microsoft Office team is working to develop new add-ins experience for Office applications. The new add-ins will be released soon.

Microsoft’s products keep on evolving with the passage of time. This is a real challenge for the developers who work hard to ensure their app works well.

WebView 2 can make their life easier by distributing a version of WebView 2 with their Windows apps.
