In computing, a hypervisor, also known by the name VMM (virtual machine monitor), is a software, firmware, or hardware computer component that enables a PC to run multiple OS.
If the hypervisor is enabled and more virtual machines were created, the computer is described as a host machine. Furthermore, the VMs created are called guest machines.
There are 2 types of hypervisors. The first type runs on the host machine’s hardware directly, without an Operating System. The second one runs on top of the OS, as an app, and is called hosted hypervisor.
