Minecraft might crash on Windows Canary 25997, but here are some workarounds

Microsoft released Build 25997 to the Canary channel within the Windows Insider Program last week, as it is currently the latest and most recent build to the channel.

In the documentation, Microsoft warns Windows users that some popular games might not properly work on the build, and one of these games, according to Windows enthusiast, @XenoPanther, is none other than Minecraft.

It seems that the Minecraft Launcher crashes when closing the game, and it also happens when the launcher is closed manually, preventing users from opening up the game again, right after closing the launcher.

Apparently, Minecraft “crashes” twice on 25997 when you close the game. It also happens when you manually close the launcher. Seems to be related to INVALID_PARAMETER_c000000d_xgameruntime.dll!OS::WaitTimer::Initialize. Seems like the bug only happens with Microsoft.GamingServices_17.83.17004.0.

While Microsoft is aware of the issue, if you’re currently enlisted in the Canary Channel of the Windows Insider Program, you might encounter it. However, there are somethings you might want to try.

Restart your device

The most obvious solution is, of course, to restart your Windows 11 device. Close Minecraft, and then the Minecraft launcher, and just restart your PC.

After the process is done, open up your Minecraft Launcher and see if it works. The launcher might run into conflicts with the current Windows build, and a restart might get rid of those conflicts.

Uninstall your Minecraft Launcher and reinstall it

1. Open your Windows 11 Settings page.
2. Once there, go to the Apps pane, and click on Installed Apps.
3. Here, search for Minecraft Launcher and uninstall it.
4. Open up your Microsoft Store.
5. Type in Minecraft Launcher, click on it, and download and install it.
6. Open your Minecraft Launcher now and see if it works.

Repair Microsoft’s Gaming Services

1. Open your Windows 11 Settings page.
2. Once there, go to the Apps pane, and click on Installed Apps.
3. There, click on Gaming Services and select Advanced options.
4. In the Gaming Services panel, scroll down to the Reset section, and click on the Repair button. This will take some moments.
5. Open up your Minecraft Launcher and see if it works now.

These are some workarounds for when Minecraft crashes while still being on the Canary 25997, that you can try. However, you should also keep in mind that Windows Insider Builds are naturally unstable, and if you’re missing your favorite games just to stay enlisted in a program, then you should probably leave the program.

You also have to keep in mind the fact that Microsoft releases builds to the Windows Insider Program on a regular schedule, sometimes weekly, so you should also update your Windows to the latest Canary version.

The Redmond-based tech giant is aware of the issue around not being able to play popular games on the Insider channels, and it will actively come up with fixes.
