The next eminent Qualcomm’s flagship system-on-chip will be the Snapdragon 835. The company recently unveiled this new generation processor, superseding the popular Snapdragon 821 and 820 found in today’s hardware, along with over 200 designs in the market for their current gen Snapdragon line-up.
The company did not reveal many details about the architecture of their newly designed chip. Here’s what we know so far about the Snapdragon 835 processor:
- The chip is built using the 10nm (nanometer) Samsung FinFET technology, making it the industry’s first in semiconductor process technology, in contrast to the 14nm process used on the 821.
- The processor is constructed from nanomaterials—molecules and atoms less than 100 nanometers (nm) in size that manifest different properties than their larger-particle equivalents: some enhanced nanomaterial characteristics include lighter weight, higher strength, and greater chemical reactivity.
Moreover, Samsung claims that the 10nm process can measure up to some combination of a 30% increase in area efficiency, 27% more performance, or 40% lower power consumption – presumably with respect to similar workloads, comparatively versus the company’s previous generation Snapdragon 820 series.

Inc. “Using the new 10nm process node is expected to allow our premium tier Snapdragon 835 processor to deliver greater power efficiency and increase performance while also allowing us to add a number of new capabilities that can improve the user experience of tomorrow’s mobile devices.
Qualcomm credits the 10nm node for its Quick Charge technology which is a feature devised to yield maximum voltage and current over USB cables to enhance power efficiency and overall device performance. But no powerful features come without their own limitations and for this particular one, it is the non-standard signaling and non-standard use of the connections in a USB cable, which is known to raise several incompatibility issues.
Moreover, the Quick Charge technology is claimed to offer 20% faster charge times along with the capability to provide up to 5 hours of battery life in just 5 minutes of charging. Qualcomm has based their claim on internal testing of a 2750mAh battery, which is a fairly standard sized battery for the average premium smartphone currently available on the market.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chips are to make an appearance on the market early next year.
