Microsoft forcing Windows 10 S users to stick to Edge and Bing
While the main focus of Windows 10 S is education, the operating system is also useful in other areas.
Microsoft 10 S and Windows Store
While being limited to apps from the Windows Store might be a frustrating limitation, it’s certainly safer. In order for this concept to become successful, developers really need to embrace the app store — something that’s definitely not happening now. The unfortunate failure of Windows RT, along with its lack of apps, might be one of the many reasons for the Windows Store’s difficulties
Edge is here to stay
When developers start to leverage the Windows Store, the Windows 10 S experiment might get on track. This will depend mostly on the web browsers available since there are plenty of users who don’t like Edge. Even if Microsoft currently allows third-party browser installs from the Windows Store, you cannot change the default. In other words, Edge is here to stay as it’s the only browser that can be set to open .thm files or web links from other applications.
Bing to remain the default search engine
Users are also prohibited from changing the default search engine from Bing. Alternatives such as DuckDuckGo and Google will be blocked, but you’ll be able to visit their websites using the browser
Inside the Windows 10 S FAQ, we found the following question:
“Are there any defaults that I cannot change on my Windows 10 S PC?”
“Yes, Microsoft Edge is the default web browser on Microsoft 10 S. You are able to download another browser that might be available from the Windows Store, but Microsoft Edge will remain the default if, for example, you open an .htm file. Additionally, the default search provider in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer cannot be changed.”
This might seem a bit anti-competitive but there is a precedent: on iOS, you cannot change the default browser either. So, as you can see, Apple can pull something like this off without much outrage.
Still, Windows users are not very satisfied with how things currently work, and they’re not very comfortable with not having the ability to change their default web browser and the search engine. Let’s see how this all plays out.
