Windows 365: 'an OS platform in cloud enabling users to log into their own customized OS in different devices'

Earlier this year, we learned that Microsoft was working on a prototype operating system called Windows Cloud. This operating system has been rumored to require an internet connection for full functionality, acting as a basic operating system when in offline mode. Rumors indicated that Microsoft was allegedly referring to this operating system as Windows 365.

Now, we are seeing some new details emerge about Windows 365, courtesy of two LinkedIn profiles of two project managers. The project in question is Windows 365, and we now know it has something to do with being a customizable cloud based operating system that works on different devices.

“Presented at Microsoft HQ to Gonnie Been, the project combined Steve Ballmer’s “One strategy, One Microsoft” approach with Satya Nadella’s “Mobile first, cloud first world” direction. The project involved the new OS platform “Windows 365″, which is cloud based and unites all smart devices,” one LinkedIn profile states.

Alignment the one strategy with “Mobile first, cloud first”, we generated the “Windows 365” which is an OS platform in cloud enabling users to log into their own customized OS in different devices,” another profile states.

These two project managers are not Microsoft employees (at least according to their profiles), but they seem to be involved in Microsoft’s Windows 365 project.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Windows 365 and it seems like this wont be the last time we hear of it. What does Windows 365 have to do with Microsoft’s Windows 9 operating system is still unclear, but one thing seems certain for now — Microsoft seems to want to create a cloud-based operating system platform that is easy to customize and works on all types of form factors.

Now, could the term “Windows 365” simply refer to Microsoft’s grand vision of having one operating system across all devices? That could be possible too. More on this as it develops.

Update: Now we are hearing that this could be an “MBA proposal” to Microsoft, rather than an actual Microsoft project. This is uncertain and unverified, but you can check out the slides here and decide for yourself.

Update 2: Looks like it is indeed a school project. Check out the blog post about it here. Even though Windows 365 was simply an idea for a school project, Microsoft is already definitely looking to head in the direction of having one operating system for any device. It will be curious to see what sort of plans Microsoft has for Windows after Windows 9 becomes available.
