Microsoft has just implemented digital purchase refunds into Xbox One and Microsoft Store. That makes Xbox One the first console ever to support this policy, and brings Microsoft’s services closer to a still more popular platform, Steam.
The new “self-service refund” system is for now only available on Xbox One’s ‘Alpha’ preview ring. This means Microsoft is still testing the new feature, before releasing it to the general public. And according to the company, the testing period won’t last for too long, as self-service refunds should make their way to Xbox One and Microsoft Store soon.
As we already mentioned, Microsoft’s new self-service refund system will work similarly to Steam’s return policy. So, players will have 14 days upon the purchase to request a refund. Additionally, the refund eligibility only applies if you’ve played the game for less than two hours.
Refunds can only be requested from the “Order history” section of your Microsoft account, and only from a web browser. There won’t be any refund options directly in the Windows Store app or the Xbox Dashboard. Microsoft also warns users that the company “reserves the right to block access for users who abuse self-service refunds.”
On top of everything, the return policy excludes “DLC, season passes, and add-ons”.
So, if you’re not satisfied with the game you’ve just purchased, or you encounter some nasty issue (and we know the Windows Store games aren’t flawless, to be honest), you’ll be able to ask for your money back. Just make sure you don’t ‘break’ any rules.
