Now that Windows 11 24H2 is out in the world and can be downloaded before you do so, please remember that Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows Mixed Reality on this version.
The Redmond-based tech giant has announced that its Windows Mixed Reality VR platform will be deprecated.
This means that the feature is no longer in active development. The announcement was made via this blog post last year, which also mentions that Windows Mixed Reality would be removed in a future version of Windows, which turned out to be the 24H2 version.
The announcement surprised many who have been following the VR space over the last few years.
Microsoft’s Hololens and Hololens 2 headsets never gained much traction against Steam and Meta’s offerings. The Redmond-based tech giant is discontinuing Hololens 2. Nor did other headsets designed for the platform, like the HP Reverb G2.
Windows Mixed Reality is deprecated, and the deprecation includes the Mixed Reality Portal app, and Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR and Steam VR Beta.
Even though it has been out in the world for a while, the deprecation has still surprised Windows users, with many hurrying to warn others before installing Windows 11 24H2.
