At Inspire 2023, Microsoft introduced two new solutions, Microsoft 365 Backup, and Microsoft 365 Archive. These innovations aim to address organizations’ challenges in managing large volumes of unstructured content within Microsoft 365.

Microsoft also announced Security Copilot early access program at Inspire 2023.

Microsoft 365 Backup: Ensuring Data Resilience

Microsoft 365 Backup provides a robust data recovery service, enabling quick restoration of OneDrive, SharePoint, and Exchange data within the Microsoft 365 security boundary. Key features include:

  • Backup of SharePoint sites, OneDrive accounts, and Exchange mailboxes.
  • Granular restoration of content at scale and specific restore point date ranges.
  • Backup APIs for partners to create comprehensive data protection solutions.

A public preview of Microsoft 365 Backup is expected in Q4 of this year.

Microsoft 365 Archive: Cost-Effective Long-Term Data Storage

Microsoft 365 Archive offers a cold data storage tier within SharePoint, providing a cost-effective solution for securely storing inactive or ageing content. Key features include:

  • Archiving or reactivating full sites within Microsoft 365.
  • Retaining full admin-level search, eDiscovery, access policy, and other security functionalities.
  • File-level archiving is to be available next year.

A public preview of Microsoft 365 Archive is also expected in Q4 of this year.

Partner Solutions: Enhancing Data Protection Capabilities

Microsoft’s APIs allow partners like AvePoint, Barracuda, CommVault, Rubrik, Veeam, and Veritas to integrate Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Archive capabilities into their data management and protection apps.
