Microsoft Edge has enjoyed some renewed momentum since its release on iOS and Android, before a switch to Chromium made it possible to bring it to older versions of Windows as well as macOS and Linux. If Google Chrome remains the obvious market leader, a recent Microsoft job listing (via Windows Central) mentioned that Edge has now crossed 600 million users.
“With the general availability Edge has already reached 600 million customers and is taking a fresh approach to browsing by putting the end user at the center and meeting the user where they are, shipping on Windows 10, down level Windows, Mac and Android,” Microsoft said in the job listing for a Principal Software Engineer that will join the Edge team. It’s not exactly clear what this 600 million customers number includes, though keep in mind that Microsoft Edge remains the default browser on Windows 10 PCs and that the OS crossed 1 billion monthly active users last year.
Beyond the Windows ecosystem, Edge now being available macOS, Linux, as well as iOS and Android likely really helped to make the browser more popular, especially with the ability to sync favorites and passwords across platforms. The initial Windows 10 exclusivity made Edge a non-starter for many, as did the fact that new features only came to the web browser every six months with new Windows 10 updates. Fortunately, the new Chromium-based Edge now gets updated just as often as Google Chrome, and Edge Insiders can also test new features before the general public.
