Firefox with Vertical tabs on left in Sidebar

The most requested Vertical Tabs will make an appearance in the upcoming Firefox. The feature can now be turned on in Nightly itself without the need to rely on third-party extensions or separate Nightly builds. Here’s how that can be done and our initial impressions of it.

Mozilla has recently announced and confirmed Firefox will get the most requested Tab Groups, Vertical Tabs, and also a new profile management feature. We have covered Vertical Tabs available in separate Nightly branch and the profile manager feature available from the main menu.

We noticed that Mozilla is working on Vertical Tabs in Firefox’s main Nightly branch. We have been able to enable and test Native Vertical Tabs in Firefox; here is our first look and experience.

Demand for vertical tabs keeps growing in the Firefox community. Because when you open many tabs, you may not be able to view tab names on the horizontal tab strip. Things become easier and any number of tab titles can be seen vertically. This also saves screen space and is helpful for multi-monitor users.

Regarding Vertical Tabs, the feature is already available in Brave, Microsoft Edge, and Vivaldi browsers. Vertical Tabs have been an integral part of the Edge browser. Brave and Vivaldi too offer the ability to view open tabs in a vertical layout. While Brave offers a tab context menu option, Vivaldi offers a setting to set the tab bar on any side, including the left.

Here’s how to enable Vertical Tabs in Firefox and use it

Mozilla has found a way to use the horizontal tab strip for vertical tabs. The company is building a feature on the Sidebar that shows history, bookmarks, and synced tabs.

Mozilla has to rebuild the Sidebar to accommodate Vertical Tabs. If you’re using Nightly, here is how you can early test the feature:

  1. Launch Firefox Nightly.
  2. Enter about:config in the address bar and press Enter.
  3. Click on Accept the risk and Continue.
  4. Find and toggle the following Preferences values to true
    sidebar.revamp
    sidebar.verticalTabs
  5. Restart Firefox.
  6. Right-click on the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar.
  7. Select Sidebars and drag and drop it to the toolbar.
  8. Click Done.

Move Firefox’s Vertical Tabs to the right side

customize sidebar settings
  1. Click on the sidebar icon to see the redesigned Sidebar, which shows current tabs in a vertical layout, history, Tabs from other devices, and customized sidebar options at the bottom.
  2. Click on the Customize Sidebar option.
  3. Under Sidebar Settings, select Show on the right.
Vertical Tabs in Firefox can be moved to right

This option will make your vertical tabs accessible on the right side. Microsoft has promised it will allow moving Edge vertical tabs to the right, but that has yet to happen.

So, what do you think about moving your sidebar to the right in Firefox? Let’s talk about that in the comments below.
