Windows 11 LTSC 2024

Microsoft has announced that new features will be added to the Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) versions of Windows 11 LTSC Enterprise and IoT Enterprise 2024, released earlier this year. LTSC is a Windows version aimed at specialized systems like medical equipment.

The last LTSC release was based on Windows 10, so this is the first LTSC release of Windows 11. The new features being added to LTSC are:

  • Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) support.
  • Wi-Fi 7 support.
  • H.266 (HEVC) support.
  • Sudo for Windows allows command-line apps to run with system rights.
  • Dev Drive is used to store development tools separately from apps and data.
  • Improvements to the Windows LAPS (Local Admin Password Solution) policy allow organizations to manage LAPS from the cloud.
  • Automatic account management is needed for the more straightforward setup of new devices.
  • Image rollback detection to automatically recover devices from failed updates.
  • Pluton, Microsoft’s new security chip, for increased protection against physical attacks.
  • Rust, a safer programming language, and SHA-3 cryptography to protect against advanced threats.
  • Passkeys for secure, passwordless access to apps and websites.
  • Personal data encryption to protect sensitive information from unauthorized apps.

It’s worth noting that LTSC does not contain certain features, like the Microsoft Store or Microsoft Edge. LTSC is also not intended for typical PCs; Microsoft recommends that enterprise customers use LTSC only for specialized devices.

Last month, Microsoft said it would support the 2024 LTSC versions of Windows 11 for ten years, up from the seven years of updates that Windows 10 LTSC received.

Microsoft has a longer list of features here (for Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024) if you’re interested.
