At the June 2026 Direct, Nintendo has officially unveiled a new Challenges feature for Nintendo Switch Online’s classic game library, which gives players a new reason to revisit retro favorites. While the feature shares some similarities with traditional achievements, Nintendo is putting its own spin on the concept.

Players will be able to complete specific in-game objectives and missions across select classic titles. Successfully finishing these challenges rewards collectible cards that can be added to a growing collection. The system appears to be inspired by the challenge-based gameplay seen in Nintendo’s NES Remix series rather than a standard achievement tracker.

The feature launches with a special DK Challenge, celebrating the history of Donkey Kong. Participating games include Donkey Kong Bananza, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Donkey Kong (Game Boy), Donkey Kong Land, Donkey Kong Land 2, and Donkey Kong Land 3.

The announcement follows recent reports and datamining discoveries that suggested Nintendo was preparing a challenge system for its retro game apps. Those leaks pointed to special objectives designed for specific games rather than a console-wide achievement system.

This is a developing story…
