Reddit comments are starting to look very different. After quietly testing the feature in select communities, Reddit has confirmed that users will soon be able to reply to posts and comments with videos. The rollout has kicked off yesterday (June 11) across public, safe-for-work (SFW) communities. However, moderators are getting early access to the controls.

Reddit users can now leave video replies in comments

For years, Reddit discussions have relied on text, images, and GIFs. Video replies add an entirely new format to the mix. The company says users will be able to upload a single video alongside text directly within a comment. Videos can be viewed across desktop and mobile, although they will not autoplay and will continue to respect users’ audio settings.

Reddit believes the feature can make discussions more engaging, especially in communities built around tutorials, creative projects, live Q&A sessions, product demonstrations, gaming clips, and expert explanations. That being said, not every subreddit may want video replies appearing under every thread.

Moderators stay in control

To avoid forcing the feature onto communities, Reddit is giving moderators several options before the wider rollout begins. Moderators can keep video comments restricted to themselves, allow approved users to participate, open the feature to everyone, or disable it entirely.

If moderators take no action during the early access period, video comments should have automatically become available to all users in eligible communities yesterday.

Notably, the feature comes with a few notable limitations. Video comments are only available in public SFW communities, users must be 18 or older to create them, and each comment can contain only one video attachment.
