XBOX Game Pass Lacks Enough Must-Play Games, Says Moon Studios CEO
XBOX Game Pass has become one of the gaming industry’s most influential subscription services, but Moon Studios CEO Thomas Mahler believes its growth has slowed because Microsoft has not delivered enough top-tier exclusive games.
Speaking about the service’s current position, Mahler argued that subscription platforms depend on a steady stream of premium content that creates a fear of missing out among players. Without major releases that users feel compelled to play immediately, he believes many subscribers will eventually question the value of paying a monthly fee.
According to Mahler, Game Pass can only remain attractive if Microsoft consistently delivers high-quality first-party titles. He suggested that several XBOX-owned studios have not produced enough standout releases to keep momentum behind the service.
Subscription Services Need Strong Content
Mahler emphasized that subscription models rely heavily on exclusive and highly anticipated software. While Game Pass offers hundreds of titles, he argued that quantity alone is not enough to drive long-term growth.
Players, he said, are unlikely to maintain subscriptions out of loyalty to a platform. Instead, they need compelling reasons to stay subscribed, particularly new releases that generate excitement and encourage continued engagement.
He also suggested that weak incentives can lead to lower effort and weaker results over time, arguing that successful subscription businesses must constantly provide content that customers feel they cannot afford to miss.
Comments Come During Major XBOX Restructuring
Mahler’s criticism arrives at a difficult time for Microsoft’s gaming division.
The company is currently undergoing significant restructuring ahead of expected layoffs in July. Recent reports indicate that changes have already begun, including leadership departures and concerns that some studios could face closure as Microsoft reviews its gaming operations.
The broader restructuring follows comments from Microsoft leadership about the need for XBOX to become financially sustainable. Rising development costs, slower industry growth, and increasing pressure to improve profitability have placed a greater focus on the performance of Microsoft’s gaming business.
