Chrome Canary now supports Global Privacy Control

Google has implemented Global Privacy Control (GPC) in Chrome Canary, allowing the browser to send a privacy request to participating websites and tell them you don’t want your personal information sold or shared.

In our testing, Chrome Canary sent the Sec-GPC: 1 request header, the official Global Privacy Control test page detected the signal, and the browser exposed the navigator.globalPrivacyControl JavaScript property used by websites to recognize the preference.

The implementation follows a recently landed Chromium change that Windows Report spotted. The commit description says:

“Adding Sec-GPC header to requests when corresponding setting is enabled and provide navigator.globalPrivacyControl property via js. Enabled with GlobalPrivacyControl feature.”

Global Privacy Control is designed to give people a simple way to communicate their privacy preference to websites. Unlike the older Do Not Track request, GPC has legal recognition in some regions, including California, where businesses may be required to respect the signal.

We first reported on Google’s plans to bring Global Privacy Control to Chrome in December 2025. The implementation is now functional in Canary, though Google hasn’t made it available in the stable release yet.

The addition is interesting because Chrome, Google’s browser, is adopting a privacy standard that lets users communicate this preference to participating websites.

Firefox, Brave, and several other browsers already support Global Privacy Control. Chrome’s implementation is still experimental and hasn’t reached the stable release yet, but once it ships more broadly, Chrome will offer the same Global Privacy Control capability already available in those browsers.
