Chrome just caught up with Edge for Netflix 4K streaming on Windows 11

Netflix users finally have another way to enjoy movies and shows in the platform’s highest quality. Google Chrome now supports Ultra HD (4K) playback on compatible Windows 11 PCs, ending a long-standing limitation that pushed users toward Microsoft Edge or the Netflix app.

Chrome joins Edge for Netflix 4K streaming

Netflix has quietly updated its supported browser requirements. The company now lists Google Chrome 117 or later as supporting Ultra HD (2160p) on Windows. Previously, Chrome was limited to lower playback resolutions.

That said, updating Chrome alone won’t unlock 4K streaming. Users must run the latest version of Windows 11, subscribe to a Netflix plan that includes Ultra HD, and maintain an internet connection of at least 15 Mbps.

Netflix says supported systems include NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 or newer, AMD Radeon RX 400 series or newer, or compatible Intel Core and AMD Ryzen processors. Some PCs also need Microsoft’s HEVC Video Extensions installed.

Your display matters too

The monitor must support 4K at 60Hz with an HDCP 2.2 connection. Every active display connected to the PC must also meet those requirements. Otherwise, Netflix may fall back to a lower resolution. Users should also set Netflix playback quality to Auto or High and choose content carrying the 4K badge.

Speaking of browsers, this change finally gives Chrome users feature parity with Edge for Netflix’s highest streaming quality on Windows. However, the same doesn’t apply elsewhere. Chrome on macOS remains limited to 1080p, while Safari continues to support 4K playback on compatible Macs.
