RTX 3080 Runs DLSS 5, and Performance Crashes to 4 FPS

DLSS 5 can run on an RTX 3080, but early unofficial testing shows a massive performance penalty that makes Neural Rendering practically unusable on the older GPU.

Modders have already managed to get DLSS 5 running in Control and on RTX 40-series hardware. Now, another test shows NVIDIA’s Neural Rendering technology working on a GeForce RTX 3080 in Deep Rock Galactic.

DLSS 5 drops the RTX 3080 from 138 FPS to 4 FPS

Deep Rock Galactic reportedly ran at around 138 FPS before DLSS 5 Neural Rendering was enabled.

Once Neural Rendering kicked in, performance collapsed to just 4 FPS. That works out to roughly a 97% reduction in frame rate.

Frame times also jumped from around 7–8 ms to approximately 260 ms.

The result looks significantly worse than previous unofficial tests on RTX 40 and RTX 50-series GPUs. Those systems reportedly suffered performance losses of around 40–50%.

For now, DLSS 5 therefore appears technically capable of running on the RTX 3080, but its current unofficial implementation offers little practical value.

The test does not represent NVIDIA’s final optimization, however. Modders enabled the technology through unofficial methods, and NVIDIA has not announced DLSS 5 support for the RTX 30 series.

NVIDIA has only confirmed DLSS 5 for RTX 50 GPUs

NVIDIA currently plans to launch DLSS 5 Neural Rendering on RTX 50-series graphics cards this fall.

The company has not confirmed whether RTX 20, RTX 30, or RTX 40 GPUs will eventually receive DLSS 5 support.

NVIDIA did expand DLSS 4.5 support to older RTX hardware, so broader DLSS 5 compatibility remains possible later.
