World Of Warcraft Forever’s Xbox Controller Support Has Players Hoping for an Xbox Version
World of Warcraft: Forever is getting official Xbox controller support on PC, giving players a new way to play Blizzard’s upcoming return to classic WoW.
BlizzCon 2026 attendees were able to test a new “gamepad option” in World of Warcraft: Forever, and Blizzard developers confirmed that official Xbox controller support will be available when the game launches later this year.
Blizzard describes the current controller implementation as being in an “alpha state,” with the development team gathering feedback from players before launch.
Xbox controller support fuels console speculation
Native controller support has renewed speculation that World of Warcraft could eventually make its way to Xbox consoles.
Blizzard has not announced an Xbox or other console version of World of Warcraft: Forever, however, so controller support should not be taken as confirmation that a console release is planned.
The feature still removes one major obstacle that would need to be addressed before World of Warcraft could comfortably work on a console.
Retail World of Warcraft presents a bigger challenge
Modern Retail World of Warcraft already works with controllers through third-party add-ons, but Blizzard says implementing official controller support presents additional challenges.
Retail WoW relies on a much larger number of abilities and key binds, making it harder to create a controller layout that works out of the box.
Developers have not ruled the idea out, saying “never say never” when discussing official controller support for Retail World of Warcraft.
Blizzard plans to monitor how players respond to World of Warcraft: Forever’s gamepad controls before deciding whether a similar system could work elsewhere.
Controller support should improve accessibility
Blizzard also highlighted accessibility as one of the main advantages of native gamepad support.
An official controller option could make World of Warcraft: Forever easier to play for users who struggle with traditional keyboard and mouse controls or simply prefer a gamepad.
World of Warcraft: Forever isn’t Blizzard’s only major announcement from BlizzCon 2026. The company also revealed Diablo 5, confirmed that Diablo 4 won’t receive another expansion before Diablo 5, and unveiled a new StarCraft game as an open-world shooter.
