Mistral AI models will now power Mozilla’s Firefox Smart Window feature
Mistral and Mozilla have announced a new partnership that brings Mistral’s AI models to Firefox Smart Window, Mozilla’s AI-powered browsing assistant. The beta feature is designed to help users make sense of complicated searches, remember information from websites and find useful details across their open browser tabs.
Firefox Smart Window gets Mistral AI models
Under the partnership, Mistral will power Firefox Smart Window for users in France and North America, with the UK and Germany expected to follow later this year.
Smart Window can work with information from the browser to help users find something they previously clicked away from, understand complex searches and source information from their open tabs. The move gives Mozilla another way to bring AI into Firefox without relying exclusively on one of the biggest AI providers.
Mistral and Mozilla are also putting privacy and user control at the center of the partnership. Mozilla says conversations in Firefox Smart Window are not saved on its servers by default, while Mistral has agreed to zero data retention for the partnership.
The companies also say they want AI experiences to better understand regional languages, dialects and cultural context. Mistral says its models are being trained and fine-tuned for local nuances rather than simply exporting one AI experience across different markets.
Mozilla and Mistral want more choice in AI-powered browsing
Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo said the partnership is intended to prevent the browser from becoming a one-way channel controlled by a single AI provider.
AI is becoming part of how people experience the web every day. We want to make sure that doesn’t mean people are chained to one company’s self-serving pipeline.
Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch described the deal as a way to bring the company’s technology to Mozilla consumers while maintaining privacy, control and choice.
This partnership represents two open-source advocates working together to bring Mistral’s scientific innovations to Mozilla’s consumers around the world.
Firefox is increasingly becoming another battleground for AI assistants as browser makers look for ways to integrate AI without giving users only one provider. Mozilla’s partnership with Mistral could offer Firefox users another model choice while keeping more emphasis on privacy and openness.
