Microsoft Will Remove Power Query as a Python Data Source in Excel for the Web

Microsoft is retiring Power Query support for Python in Excel for the web, which could break existing workbooks that rely on Power Query data inside Python formulas and scripts.

According to Microsoft 365 Message Center advisory MC1473149, the feature will stop working on October 16, 2026.

Power Query lets Excel users extract, clean, and transform data before loading it into a workbook. Its integration with Python in Excel allows Python formulas and scripts to use that prepared data as a source.

Once Microsoft retires the integration, users will no longer be able to use Power Query as a Python data source in Excel for the web.

Existing Python and Power Query workflows could break

The change means existing workbooks and workflows that depend on the integration may stop working as expected when opened or used through Excel for the web after October 16.

Microsoft says the retirement will help align its investment in Python in Excel with the experiences it continues to support.

The company hasn’t announced a replacement for the functionality being removed from the web version.

Organizations that rely on Python and Power Query together will therefore need to review their existing Excel workflows before the deadline.

Excel for Windows keeps the feature

The retirement only affects Excel for the web. Microsoft confirmed that Power Query will remain available as a data source for Python in Excel for Windows desktop.

Users who need to work with Power Query data from Python will need to move affected workflows to the supported Windows desktop version of Excel.

This could particularly affect organizations that rely on browser-based Excel workflows or share workbooks with users who primarily access Microsoft 365 through the web.

Admins can’t prevent the change

Microsoft isn’t providing an administrator setting or opt-out that can keep the feature enabled in Excel for the web after October 16.

The company recommends that administrators identify users and workbooks that depend on the integration, update internal documentation, and prepare affected workflows before support ends.

Organizations may also need to make sure affected users have access to Excel for Windows if they intend to continue using Power Query data with Python.
