Trump Wants to Officially Rename Artificial Intelligence to “Super Intelligence,” Says “Artificial” Sounds Fake

The US President, Donald Trump, has announced a rather unusual change for the AI industry. During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, Trump said the U.S. would start referring to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” in government documents.

Trump made the announcement while discussing the U.S. position on AI regulation. He said the word “artificial” makes intelligence sound fake, arguing that the technology is actually “amazing” and that a different name would be more accurate.

Trump said that, from this point forward, U.S. government documents would use the new terminology and added that he hoped other countries would eventually do the same.

From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully, the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term super as opposed to artificial.

He then introduced “SI” as a shortened version of Super Intelligence, joking that it sounded better and saying he would see whether he had enough influence to make the change happen.

That said, Trump’s remarks do not by themselves change the technical name of the technology worldwide. Reports following the speech said it was not immediately clear whether the announcement would be followed by a formal executive order or another federal directive.

For those unaware, Superintelligence is already an established term in AI research, generally describing a hypothetical form of machine intelligence that would substantially exceed human cognitive abilities. That means using the phrase for today’s broader category of AI could create some confusion.
