Meta Unveils $1,299 VR Glasses That Weigh Just 100 Grams and Put an IMAX Cinema, Gaming and Work Desk on Your Face
The glasses will launch in Spring 2027
Meta has unveiled Meta VR Glasses, a new virtual reality device that packs a cinema, sports viewing experience, gaming platform and private workspace into a glasses-style design weighing about 100 grams.
The company says this is the result of more than a decade of VR development. Unlike traditional headsets, Meta VR Glasses have no straps or heavy hardware sitting on the user’s face. The glasses use open sides and passthrough cameras so users can remain aware of their surroundings.
Meta VR Glasses pack a 5K display and Snapdragon Reality Elite
The glasses use a 5K Infinite Display based on micro-OLED panels, with 37 pixels per degree. Meta has also fitted ultra-compact pancake lenses, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio directly into the frames.
The system is split into two parts. The glasses handle the display and sensors, while a connected puck handles computing, battery and storage. Meta says the glasses are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3, while the puck provides up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback and supports 45W fast charging.
Meta AI is built directly into the operating system. Users can speak to the glasses or use eye tracking and natural hand gestures to play movies, open apps, adjust their workspace and search for information without controllers. The glasses are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor.
Your own IMAX cinema and courtside seat
Meta VR Glasses are the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device, with support for select 3D movies and IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio. Disney+ will begin offering 3D movies in select countries in November, including The Avengers and Black Panther, alongside themed environments such as Tatooine and Avengers Tower.
Meta is also bringing Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM, with 3D versions of films including Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope. The company says thousands of titles will be available internationally at launch, with more 3D movies arriving over time.
Sports are another major focus. Meta says more than 100 immersive live sports events will be available each year, with partners including MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC. ESPN’s Immersive Sports experience will offer 8K streaming and 180-degree views.
For work, users can create multiple large virtual screens and turn a flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad. Full-color passthrough lets users see their desk, phone and surroundings while working. Gaming also gets more than 75 hand-tracked games at launch, while Xbox Cloud Gaming will provide access to hundreds more.
Meta is also introducing Hologram Calling, which creates a photorealistic digital version of the user with real-time expressions and spatial audio. It works with calling apps including WhatsApp and Zoom, while people joining from phones or PCs can see the hologram on their screens. Meta has confirmed that the VR Glasses will launch in Spring 2027 for $1,299.99. Not to forget, the company has also announced new designs of Ray-Ban Meta glasses and expanded features for Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses.
