Here's Why Sony Is Skipping CES 2027
Sony is officially skipping CES 2027, ending a decades-long presence at the Las Vegas tech show as the company puts more focus on entertainment, intellectual property and technology for creators. The news was first reported by Nikkei Asia, with Bloomerg reporting about it later with additional statements from the company.
That is a pretty big change for a company that has been associated with CES since the event began in 1967. Sony’s decision also comes after it already skipped having its own booth at CES 2026, although Sony Honda Mobility used the show to display the Afeela electric vehicle.
Sony says entertainment is taking priority over CES
In a statement to Bloomberg, Sony said, “We continuously and strategically evaluate our approach to events and communications based on the needs and priorities of our diverse business.” The company says its focus is increasingly moving toward entertainment, intellectual property and technologies that support creators.
That covers some of Sony’s biggest businesses today, including games, music, films and anime. It also helps explain why CES may not be as useful to the company as it once was. A trade show built heavily around consumer hardware is a natural place to show off televisions, cameras, audio products and other gadgets, while Sony’s broader entertainment strategy can be presented through its own events and platforms.
Sony has also been stepping back from some of the hardware categories that once made its CES appearances especially interesting. The Afeela project is one example. Sony Honda Mobility showcased the electric vehicle at CES 2026, but Sony and Honda later scrapped the vehicle project and said they would reassess the future direction of their joint venture.
Don’t expect Sony to reveal PlayStation 6 at CES 2027
For PlayStation fans, the obvious question is whether Sony’s CES exit means anything for future hardware announcements. Well, PlayStation 6 hasn’t ever been rumored to launch at CES 2027 in the first place, so Sony skipping the show should not be treated as a cancellation or delay of any PlayStation announcement. In fact, Sony has used its own PlayStation showcases to reveal gaming hardware, accessories and software.
But the company’s latest decision means CES 2027 will not be the place to look for a Sony booth or presentation. Sony also says it will maintain its relationship with the Consumer Technology Association, meaning this is not being presented as a permanent break from CES. Whether the company returns in 2028 or later remains undecided.
