POP4.2 can bypass Microsoft’s SSE4.2 CPU requirement, allowing Windows 11 26H2 and older versions to run on some processors that Microsoft officially considers unsupported.

The third-party POP4.2 utility targets one of the CPU restrictions Microsoft introduced with Windows 11 24H2.

POP4.2 bypasses the Windows 11 SSE4.2 requirement

Starting with Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft made SSE4.2 and PopCnt mandatory processor requirements. CPUs that lack the required instructions can no longer boot newer Windows 11 releases normally.

According to its developer, POP4.2 should work on CPUs that support PopCnt but do not support SSE4.2, potentially allowing them to install and run Windows 11 26H2 and previous releases.

The bypass does not remove every processor requirement, however. Hardware still needs the necessary PopCnt capability for the workaround to function.

The utility modifies the Windows kernel CPU check

POP4.2 works by changing how the Windows kernel verifies processor features during startup.

The developer reverse-engineered ntoskrnl.exe using Interactive Disassembler, or IDA, to identify the section responsible for checking supported CPU instructions.

The utility then modifies that behavior, so Windows skips the relevant processor requirement check, allowing the operating system to continue booting on certain CPUs that lack SSE4.2.

This approach targets the CPU verification itself rather than simply bypassing the Windows Setup compatibility screen.

Windows 11 runs on older AMD processors with the bypass

POP4.2 was tested on an AMD Phenom X4 9600, while Windows 11 25H2 was also demonstrated on an Athlon II X2 M320.

Compatibility still depends on the hardware, and Intel Core 2 processors are not supported because they lack the required SSE4a/PopCnt capabilities.

The developer also warns about compatibility problems with some Nvidia nForce chipsets, where systems may hang or freeze while using the bypass.

As a result, POP4.2 mainly expands Windows 11 compatibility for a specific group of older processors rather than providing a universal way to install the operating system on unsupported hardware.

Microsoft has also released the Windows 11 26H2 KB5121794 Enablement Package for supported systems, while official Windows 11 26H2 ISO images are now available for clean installations, upgrades, and repairs.
