Windows 11 Insider Experimental (Future Platforms) Preview Build 29680.1000 is now available, bringing improvements to Windows Share, File Explorer, Settings, and several important fixes.

Microsoft released Windows 11 Insider Experimental (Future Platforms) Preview Build 29680.1000 with a relatively small set of changes, but some should make everyday tasks more convenient.

Windows Share gets app pinning

Microsoft is making Windows Share easier to customize by allowing users to pin their favorite apps.

This should make frequently used sharing destinations quicker to reach instead of requiring users to find the same app each time they open the Share interface.

Settings also gets a small but useful improvement. Under Settings > Apps > Installed apps, Windows 11 now displays version numbers directly for packaged apps.

This makes it easier to check which version of an app is installed without opening additional menus or looking elsewhere for the information.

File Explorer improves downloaded file previews

Microsoft is also adjusting how File Explorer handles previews for downloaded files.

Downloaded HTML files now display a Preview anyway button, giving users the option to view their contents directly from File Explorer.

Other downloaded file types, including PDFs, can still display their previews automatically.

Microsoft also fixed an issue that caused an unexpected bar to appear inside some File Explorer previews.

USB audio and Remote Desktop fixes arrive

Preview Build 29680.1000 includes several fixes covering audio devices, Remote Desktop, Family Safety, and the taskbar.

Microsoft fixed a problem affecting some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices after recent updates. The issue could affect hardware such as multichannel USB headsets.

The company also resolved a Remote Desktop bug that could cause sessions to open using the wrong window size.

Microsoft addressed additional issues involving Family Safety messaging and visual problems with the Windows taskbar.

The build also includes work related to severe system lag that could become progressively worse after using the PC for an extended period.

Performance degradation remains a known issue

Not every problem has been resolved yet.

Microsoft says it is still investigating reports of performance degradation that becomes worse the longer recent builds are used.

The company is also looking into reports that devices running VMware can encounter green screens.

However, Microsoft says the previously reported issue causing VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.4 to display a blank window has now been fixed.

These known issues remain particularly important for Insiders testing Future Platforms builds, which Microsoft uses for experimental Windows development rather than updates tied directly to a specific public Windows release.

Microsoft releases more Windows 11 Insider builds

The Future Platforms release arrives alongside several other Windows 11 Insider updates.

Microsoft also released a Windows 11 Insider Experimental 26H1 Build that improves Cloud Rebuild and introduces additional recovery changes.

The company also shipped a new Windows 11 Insider Beta (26H1) Build with improvements to Magnifier, File Explorer, and other parts of the operating system.

For users testing Microsoft’s most experimental Windows work, Build 29680.1000 mainly focuses on smaller usability improvements and fixes, while the ongoing performance and VMware issues remain areas to watch.
