OpenAI is taking ChatGPT ads into a more visual direction. The company has announced a new ad format that will appear during image generation, giving businesses a way to showcase products and services while people create images in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT image generation is getting visual ads

The new format is designed around images that can show product inspiration, how a product is used, or the experience associated with a service. OpenAI says this could give advertisers another way to introduce their brands while users are exploring ideas and making decisions.

The ads will be clearly labeled and will remain separate from the image being generated. OpenAI also says advertising will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Testing is scheduled to begin later this month in the US with an initial group of advertisers.

OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people each week, giving the company a huge audience as it continues expanding its advertising business.

OpenAI is also expanding how ChatGPT Ads are measured

The company is adding more measurement tools and advertising partnerships, including integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp. It also supports attribution partners such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Northbeam, Branch and others.

OpenAI is also working with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand suitability evaluation pilots. The goal is to help advertisers understand where their ads appear without giving those partners access to private user conversations.

The company says its advertising guardrails are designed to keep ads away from emotionally vulnerable, sensitive or otherwise unsuitable conversations. OpenAI also says ChatGPT answers remain independent, conversations stay private and users remain in control of their experience. Businesses can already sign up to advertise on ChatGPT, while the new visual format will begin testing in the US later this month.
