Google Docs Gets a Major Markdown Upgrade, Letting You Edit .md Files Without Converting Them

Google is making it much easier to work with Markdown files in Google Workspace. The company has announced that users can now view, edit and collaborate on .md and .markdown files directly in Google Docs, while Google Drive can display fully rendered previews of the files.

Google Docs can now edit Markdown files natively

Previously, working with Markdown in Docs often meant importing and converting the file into a Google Doc. That could alter formatting, strip comments and create separate files. The new system keeps the Markdown file as an .md file while allowing users to work on it through Google Docs.

Once an .md file is uploaded to Google Drive, users can open it in Google Docs and edit it without changing the original file type. Google also brings familiar collaboration tools to Markdown, including comments, sharing and real-time collaboration.

Drive is also getting a rendered Markdown preview. This means users can view formatted headings, tables and clickable links directly in Drive instead of opening the raw Markdown syntax.

The move also has an obvious AI angle. Google describes Markdown as a format widely used by large language models to preserve structured content such as headings, tables and lists. Native Markdown support therefore makes it easier for humans and AI agents to work on the same structured files without conversion.

The feature is rolling out now

Google says the rollout began October 5, 2026, with both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains receiving the feature gradually over up to 15 days. There is no admin control or end-user setting required, and the feature is available to Google Workspace customers as well as users with personal Google accounts.
