Copilot Notebooks October 2026 Update Adds Office Editing, AI Automations & Interactive Reports
Microsoft is making Copilot Notebooks much more than a place to collect documents and ask AI questions. The October 2026 update brings task delegation, recurring automations, direct Office editing, interactive reports, and new ways to turn project information into polished deliverables.
Microsoft Copilot Notebooks can now do more of the work
If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot for work, you must be aware of how important project context can be. Speaking of which, Microsoft now lets Copilot create notebooks from simple prompts instead of requiring users to build everything manually.
You can describe your project, and Copilot will gather relevant references from your work data and the web. The updated experience also supports Markdown, TXT, and RTF files alongside existing sources, including documents, emails, and meetings.
Notably, Copilot can now handle simple tasks directly from notebook chats. It can manage references, summarize information across a project, and create or edit individual Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. Users can also choose whether Copilot relies only on notebook references or uses broader work and web context.
Copilot Notebooks gets recurring tasks and model selection
One of the more interesting additions is scheduled automation. Users will be able to schedule recurring tasks, such as daily morning briefs and weekly status presentations, instead of repeatedly prompting Copilot.
Microsoft is also adding model choice, allowing users to select a model for notebook conversations or request deeper reasoning. Both task delegation and model selection are currently available through the Frontier program, while scheduled automations are coming in the next few weeks.
Office editing and interactive reports come to Notebooks
Microsoft is bringing the full power of Office into Copilot Notebooks. Users can open documents inline, edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly on the canvas, or ask Copilot to add content and adjust formatting. Teams can also collaborate on the same files.
Beyond traditional Office documents, users can create interactive reports featuring visual insights and dynamic content. Copilot can also generate PDFs from notebook material, making it easier to share polished summaries with stakeholders.
The update also improves audio overviews with additional reference types and new formats, including “Critique and Debate.” Longer overviews can feature topic-based episodes, while saved audio files inherit sensitivity labels. Microsoft says the Office editing, interactive reports, and PDF features are available in Frontier. Updated audio overviews are coming in the next few weeks, while suggested artifacts are generally available.
