OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT Chrome extension, adding access to open browser tabs, improved conversation management, and AI-powered task automation.

The update follows OpenAI’s decision to discontinue its standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser and brings several browser automation capabilities directly to Google Chrome.

ChatGPT can now access and compare open Chrome tabs

Users can now mention @chrome in the ChatGPT web or desktop app to give the AI access to information from their open Chrome tabs.

OpenAI demonstrated the feature by asking ChatGPT to compare sofas across three open shopping tabs. The AI can analyze product specifications, compare prices, and summarize differences without requiring users to copy information between websites.

The upgraded extension also includes an improved sidebar that provides access to the complete ChatGPT conversation history while browsing. Users can keep ChatGPT open alongside their current webpage and organize or group browser tabs.

ChatGPT Work brings AI automation to Chrome

The update also integrates ChatGPT Work, allowing the AI to interact with websites and complete tasks across multiple tabs.

Users can ask ChatGPT to collect vendor information, compare prices and features, and organize the results into a spreadsheet. It can also fill out registration forms using information from other documents, with the option to stop before submitting them.

Other supported tasks include comparing contractors, drafting emails to selected providers, sending messages, downloading files, and adding appointments to personal or work calendars.

The upgraded extension is available in Chrome

Users can access the updated extension through the Chrome Web Store. The new capabilities allow ChatGPT users to automate browser tasks without switching to a separate AI-powered browser.

The update comes as Google continues improving Chrome, including a potential option to filter browsing history by time range and the recent Chrome 155 update that fixes 37 security vulnerabilities.

Separately, OpenAI recently made headlines after using its own AI to trace a hidden recording device, leading to the arrest of a Saudi engineer.
