OpenAI wants to change how people talk about the massive facilities powering ChatGPT and its growing AI goals. The company is now pushing the term “AI compute campuses” instead of traditional data centers. Interestingly, the rebranding comes as communities increasingly question the environmental and economic costs of AI infrastructure.

OpenAI’s planned rebranding push

According to Axios, OpenAI’s plans for a post-election policy and public relations campaign. The report included the proposed “AI compute campuses” terminology as part of the company’s efforts to reshape the public debate.

A statement shared by OpenAI spokesperson to Business Insider reads, “Compute campuses better describes the scale and role of the infrastructure we’re building for AI.” The company also described these projects as long-term investments in computing, energy infrastructure, and skilled jobs.

The terminology may sound more welcoming than data centers, which often bring concerns about electricity demand, water consumption, noise, and local infrastructure. However, changing the label alone does not address those concerns.

A branding change facing a bigger public challenge

OpenAI’s broader strategy reportedly includes community agreements and proposals giving residents more influence over how projects are built. The company also wants host communities to share in the economic benefits of these developments.

That effort comes as AI infrastructure faces growing political scrutiny in the United States. Technology companies need more computing capacity, but large facilities can place substantial demands on local power grids and surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, OpenAI continues expanding its Stargate infrastructure plans with partners including Oracle and SoftBank. The company has committed to building substantial AI capacity, making community support increasingly important.

However, it remains unclear whether “compute campuses” will become an industry-wide term or simply OpenAI’s preferred branding. It will be interesting to see whether the company delivers measurable benefits to communities hosting these projects.
