PS4's 9.60 update: 5 problems and fixes that we found

As most of you are probably aware by now, Sony just released a brand new update for their console lineup, which also included some of the older models.

It has definitely been somewhat of a busy week for PlayStation users, as the PS3 and PS Vita also received new system updates just a few days ago.

Contrary to what Sony had planned, these recent updates didn’t please users at all, as they had to deal with whole new situations after.

Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 also received new software and, even though not all of them had problems afterward, some reported some pretty weird console glitches, especially on the PS4.

What issues are players experiencing after update 9.60?

Well, let’s just say that the patch notes weren’t exactly right about what was about to happen after players installed the new software version.

  • This software update is improving the efficiency of the system.

That’s what the release log said, but the reality is a bit different. There’s even a Reddit post where people share the situations they had to go through since this patch was out.

Ever since this update was downloaded and installed, some PS4 users started experiencing:

  1. Random freezes during gameplay.
  2. Receiving random errors when trying to play Youtube videos.
  3. Triangle and square buttons not working on Youtube anymore.
  4. Internet connection not working on PS4.
  5. Console crashing with error codes su-30746-0, and su-42118-6.

Before we start showing you the solutions, you should know that the PS4 SU-42118-6 error mostly results in a restart loop for PS4 and it’s mostly due to a broken ribbon connector between your motherboard and BD-ROM.

How can I fix the problems caused by update 9.60?

1. Rebuild database

  1. Completely power off your console.
  2. Press and hold the power button.
  3. Release the button after you hear the second beep.
  4. For PS4, you’ll need to connect your controller via USB, then choose to Rebuild Database.
  5. For PS5, you’ll now boot into Safe Mode. Plug your controller in with the cable, then go down and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
  6. After that, click on Rebuild Database, then on OK.

2. Manually install the update file

  1. Plug USB into your PC and create a folder called PS4 on the USB root path.
  2. Create an Update folder within the initial PS4 folder.
  3. Download the System Update file from the PS4 official website.
  4. Save it with the name PS4UPDATE.PUP and store it in the Update folder.
  5. Connect the USB drive to your PS4
  6. Turn on PS4 and click the PS button on the controller.
  7. Now go to Settings, then System SoftwareUpdate.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

3. Reinstall system software

  1. Power off your console completely, then unplug any cables (Keep in mind not setting it to Rest Mode).
  2. Press the power button on your PS4, then hold it down until you hear two beeps (It usually takes like 10 seconds).
  3. You’ll see a black screen when the system boots up in Safe Mode.
  4. There, you can either choose Restore Default Settings, Initialize PS4, or Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software).

If nothing on this list works for you, seriously consider contacting PlayStation Support about this problem.

Also, if you are dealing with error code su-42118-6, replacing your PS4’s hard drive is also a valid option you might want to look into if nothing else works.

Some of the affected PS4 users even said that this update bricked their consoles, so be very careful when dealing with it.
