Microsoft is no stranger to NPUs, and we might see an NPU on the gen Xbox consoles, but what about desktops?
It seems that AMD NPUs might get better Windows support soon. Here’s what we know so far.
After Intel, AMD NPUs are finally getting Windows integration
According to Neowin, AMD is working alongside Microsoft to bring better support for NPU hardware on Windows.
Currently, only Intel NPUs work with Windows thanks to the compatibility with Microsoft’s DirectML API. That’s about the change with the upcoming support for Microsoft Compute Driver Model infrastructure.
Using this infrastructure, NPUs will get access to various features, such as scheduling, power management, memory management, and Task Manager support.
By being able to track resource usage, users will be able to prolong battery life, while developers will be able to optimize NPU-powered applications.
Currently, only the Ryzen 8040 Series is getting this feature, but that will surely change as more and more NPU devices become available on the market.
Sadly, no information on when we can expect to see these changes, but we hope we won’t have to wait too long.
