There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the big Goldeneye announcement in yesterday’s Nintendo Direct event, with Microsoft making a similar announcement the same day. What we know is that the classic first-person shooter Goldeneye 007 will be coming to both Nintendo Switch and Xbox—in the latter case via Xbox Game Pass.

We also know that the Xbox version will be a remaster of the game, with support for 4K resolution. What it will not have, however, is online multiplayer. That feature will apparently be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch online service. It will mark the first time the game has gone online. Xbox players will still be able to enjoy local multiplayer for up to four players—which was one of the things that made the original Goldeneye such a blast in the first place.

To recap and hopefully clear up any confusion:

  • The Xbox release of Goldeneye 007 will be a completely different, remastered version of the game, and will be available on Game Pass. It will include local multiplayer as in the original game.
  • The Switch version will be a re-release of the original game with (exclusive) online multiplayer.

It didn’t help that both Nintendo and Microsoft chose to unveil their versions of the game on the same day. Maybe they were trying to steal each other’s thunder? Anyhow, it seems the game will be “coming soon,” although no specific release date has been given.
