Did you know Microsoft ended Halo MCC development last July?

In an unexpected turn of events, recently, it was discovered that Microsoft silently stopped support for one of its flagship games, Halo, last July. The game was originally developed by Bungie.

According to reports, development for Halo: The Master Chief Collection (TMCC) stopped in 2023, which shocked the game’s fans.

The game franchise changed the first-person shooter genre on consoles with its gameplay mechanics and charming storyline.

The Master Chief Collection is a collection of all mainline Halo titles that was launched in 2014. It comes with a lot of campaign missions, multiplayer maps, and modes in one package. It was successful initially. However, recent reports suggest that support for the collection was ended quietly.

Microsoft shared the decision with developers last May and never renewed the contract, which ended in July. The last major update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection was released in July 2023, and the decision to stop support was likely made due to a lack of sustainable revenue streams for the game.

Rebs Gaming, a gaming news reporter and content creator, tweeted on X (formerly Twitter):

One reason Microsoft ended Halo MCC development last July is because it lacks a revenue stream. 343 Industries wasn’t happy with Microsoft’s decision. Btw 343 tried to create revenue for MCC with purchasable Spartan Points but scrapped the idea due to backlash from Halo fans.

The news has shocked Halo fans and left them confused about the future of the franchise. Fans are also wondering about the future of other existing titles, as the developers seem to have shifted the focus towards Halo Infinite, the latest game in the series.

As of now, Microsoft and 343 Industries have not spoken on the matter, but fans are hoping that the company provides them with an update related to the franchise’s future.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite are available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass subscription services. To learn about what’s next in the Halo franchise, you can read this guide
