DiRT Rally on Xbox One might need dynamic resolution to maintain 60fps

As the launch of DiRT Rally for consoles nears, the Xbox One looks like it will adopt dynamic resolution to maintain the Codemasters’ 1080p / 60fps mix they want to allow console players to experience.

Codemasters spoke with VideoGamer.com regarding the current in-testing state of both console versions of the game. The PlayStation 4 is reportedly almost able to handle the 1080p / 60fps goal, but the Xbox One drops below the 60fps goal line during more visually-demanding sequences. Heavy snow or rain on certain tracks are common culprits, and the Xbox One will likely see a dynamic resolution drop to 900p rather than letting the framerate pull players out of the moment.

According to Codemasters, as reported by VideoGamer.com, chief game designer Paul Coleman is “absolutely confident” of the PlayStation 4’s capability of achieving the desired resolution and framerate combination, with the Xbox One’s version looking “pretty good” for the same goal.

As Coleman told VideoGamer.com, the shelf launch is still set for April 5, and if all does not go as well as it needs to, “there’s no reason we can’t do a day-one patch to continue those optimizations,” Coleman said.

While we’ll have to wait until the game officially launches on April 5, players will likely see dynamic resolution decreases for more graphically-intense sections, then a return to the wonders of 1080p / 60fps to carry on to the finish line. We’ll keep you updated on the games progress.
