AI-based SauLM-7B LLM

In the past, we have had instances of AI-based chatbots cooking up legal precedents that never existed, highlighting how the available options didn’t meet the standards of the legal industry. Mistakes in court filing can prove catastrophic for both lawyers and clients!

As a result, the release of SauLM-7B, an open-source large language model (LLM) curated for legal applications, by Equall is turning a lot of heads.

You can simply present your legal problem, and the AI-based text generator will respond, as is the case with any chatbot. The only difference, it’s tailored for the legal side of things!

In an interview with The Register, a spokesperson for Equall said,

LLMs and more broadly AI systems will have a transformative impact on the practice of law that includes but goes beyond marginal productivity. Our focus is on creating end-to-end legal AI systems guided and controlled by lawyers.

The team further adds how SauLM-7B will prove more effective at legal problems than generally available options.

Our belief — based on data and experience — is that systems specialized for the legal domain will perform better than generalist ones. This includes greater precision and more useful tools to help lawyers focus on what they enjoy most and do best, which is to exercise legal judgment and help their clients with advice.

The team, after evaluating SauLM-7B with lawyers, confirmed that it performed far better than regular AI-based chatbots, didn’t provide as many inaccuracies and was less prone to hallucinating (cooking up concepts) when talking about specific legal topics.

Since it’s in the early stages, we recommend cross-checking any information or suggestion provided by SauLM-7B with a legal expert. Law is a complex and ever-evolving field where recent developments play a critical role. So, it’s imperative that you verify things!

If SauLM-7B, named after the popular show Better Call Saul, turns out to be as accurate and effective as advertised, it will be a game-changer and will aid the less fortunate who can’t employ the services of a lawyer.
