After weeks of teasing, PUBG finally launched on the Xbox Preview Program this week. The battle royale game is definitely one of the most hyped games of 2017, and you can expect Microsoft to continue beating the PUBG drum during the rest of the holiday season.
Today, the company announced a special holiday promotion that will grant everyone who purchases an Xbox One X a free digital copy of PUBG ($29.99 value). The limited time offer will be available in select regions starting Sunday, December 17 through December 31.
“Xbox fan excitement for the launch has been incredible, with more than 1 million players on Xbox One in its first 48 hours alone,” the Xbox team said in a blog post today (a blog post that also appears on news.microsoft.com, which is quite exceptional for Xbox news). It’s true that PUBG was one the most exciting games to launch on the Xbox One this year, and Microsoft is pretty much giving the game the first-party treatment right now.
While we have a yet to see some official Xbox One X bundles, it’s interesting to see that Microsoft has chosen PUBG (which is still in preview) to promote the world’s most powerful console. If the game supports 4K graphics and HDR on the Xbox One X, it’s still pretty rough around the edges: according to our colleagues over at Digital Foundry, the game struggles to consistently reach 30FPS on the Xbox One X, and it’s unsurprisingly not better on the standard Xbox One. PUBG is definitely a fun game, but it’s clearly not the best title to showcase the 6 teraflops of computing power available in Microsoft’s new console.
Do you think giving away PUBG with Xbox One X purchases will help Microsoft ship more consoles during the holidays? Sound off in the comments below.
