Oracle and Microsoft are considering a collaboration to tackle the growing demand for high-capacity servers in the field of artificial intelligence. According to The Information, the two tech giants are contemplating an arrangement that would enable them to rent servers from each other to cater to their large-scale AI cloud customers. The companies plan to offer their clients easy access to computing resources on both clouds by using their existing partnership established in 2019.
The agreement being proposed will use the strong infrastructure built by the fiber links connecting Oracle and Microsoft’s data centers directly. Originally designed to help distribute computing tasks, these connections can now also be used to share GPU server capacity. This helps address server shortages and meets the growing demand for AI computing power for both companies.
Microsoft has previously implemented access restrictions to AI servers for certain internal teams, prioritizing customers’ access to computing resources, with companies like OpenAI benefiting from this arrangement. The company has an exclusive license to offer OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Dall-E creator services over its Azure cloud platform.
Other than resource sharing, Oracle has also expressed interest in reselling OpenAI’s software to its customers, just as it resells Microsoft 365 productivity suite to its customer base. Incorporating OpenAI’s software into its offerings will enhance Oracle’s AI capabilities and provide its clients with cutting-edge solutions for their business needs.
The discussions between Oracle and Microsoft highlight the importance of collaboration and resource optimization in the fast-evolving field of AI.
