Microsoft Edge has reached its all-time high desktop browser market share with 13.14% according to Statcounter’s May 2024 report. For those unaware, Statcounter releases data for different segments every month, and desktop browser market share is one of them. This indicator hints at what browser apps people prefer to use for browsing the internet.
Microsoft Edge hits an all-time high of 13.14% of worldwide desktop browser market share in May 2024
Per the report, Microsoft Edge was the second most used desktop browser after Google Chrome. Edge saw an increase of 0.16% compared to April’s market share to bag the record high market share of 13.14% in May. This change could be due to constant updates and improvements rolling out for the Edge desktop browser over the last few months.
On the other hand, despite bagging the top spot Google Chrome’s market share declined from 65.65% reported in April to 64.87% reported for May 2024. That accounted for a 0.78% drop and could mean users have found an alternative and are shifting to other browsers.
Apple’s Safari browser managed to hold the third position with 8.79% right below Microsoft Edge in the desktop browser market share. Whereas, Mozilla Firefox and Opera make it to the top five desktop browsers with 6.64% and 3.23% market share in May.
We have detailed the market share of these browsers by comparing May 2024 data with April 2024 below, have a look.
Browsers | April 2024 | May 2024 | Difference |
Google Chrome | 65.65% | 64.87% | -0.78% |
Microsoft Edge | 12.97% | 13.14% | +0.16% |
Safari | 8.44% | 8.79% | +0.35% |
Mozilla Firefox | 6.73% | 6.64% | -0.09% |
Opera | 3.09% | 3.23% | +0.14% |
Microsoft Edge is not doing well in the mobile browser space
Despite showing signs of recovery in the desktop browser segment, Microsoft Edge is still nowhere near its competitors. Even the Chinese QQ browser is ahead of Edge in terms of mobile browser market share. Microsoft Edge had the lowest market share of the nine mobile browsers highlighted by Statcounter in the May 2024 report.
Although it is tough for Microsoft Edge to disrupt the mobile browser space currently dominated by Chrome and Safari, the company is constantly working to improve the Edge mobile app.
Time will tell if we will see Edge gaining mobile browser market share. But, one thing is certain, users are seemingly turning up to Microsoft Edge for their browsing needs on desktop.
