Microsoft is reportedly partnering with OpenAI to build a data center with a supercomputer codenamed Stargate for AI training. Reportedly, the total money behind this project is a whopping $100 billion. Yes, you read that correctly.
As per a report by The Information, Microsoft and OpenAI are in the third of a five-phase supercomputer project Stargate. The report also claims that the supercomputer will reportedly feature millions of specialized chips from different suppliers.
The report further suggests that Microsoft and OpenAI aim to complete the Stargate supercomputer project over the next six years. Let’s not forget that Microsoft is likely financing the project, which could cost 100 times more than some of the biggest data centers available today.
That’s not all, the Redmond giant is reportedly also working on a fourth-phase supercomputer for OpenAI, which will launch in 2026. However, the completion of the Stargate project is subject to the availability of OpenAI’s next-gen AL LLM model, GPT-5.
Although Microsoft and OpenAI are running the AI race together, this project might draw regulators’ attention in the near future. Antitrust regulators in the US, UK, and EU have been closely monitoring the partnership of the two entities for some time now.
