Microsoft’s Skype team has been as busy as any and probably more than most, pumping out cross-platform updates to the personal communicator’s various apps and incorporating new innovative technologies. Today, Microsoft took a look back on Skypes “big year,” providing an overview of everything the team has accomplished in 2015.
From the fun and frivolous, such as new emojis and video Mojis, to more serious and impactful innovations like Skye Translator, Microsoft’s personal communicator has gone through some serious improvements. Here are the highlights.
Skype Translator
Skype can translate your voice and text, in real-time, ushering in a pretty cool new way to communicate with people of other locations and languages. Skype Translator can handle voice translation for Chinese Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, and text translation for over 50 languages. Of course, all of that is available via the Windows desktop app.
Skype Invitations
Invite anyone to a Skype chat via a unique link, which is made even more ubiquitous by virtue of the new Skype for Web beta.
Cross-Platform Apps
Skype is everywhere, running on every major platform and device type including iOS, Android, Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, iPhone iPad, Lumia smartphones, and Android devices. In fact, Skype was selected by Google as one of the “Best Apps of 2015” available to Google Play Store users.
Mojis and Emoticons
Skype Mojis are fun little video clips that can accentuate a conversation or poke fun at a chat partner. And new emoticons add additional frivolity to otherwise serious discussions.
Social and Campaign Highlights
The Skype team was busy letting us know what’s going on with them, the world, and even ourselves. Here are a few highlights:
- Skype in the Classroom
- Anniversary of Doc and Marty McFly in Back to the Future
- Actors master the art of the roving rehearsal
- Helping kids with cancer stay connected to the world
We’re looking forward to what Skype makes possible in 2016, and will be sure to keep you up to date on everything you can do with Skype.
