American animated comedy Family Guy once famously included a mention of Microsoft’s Bing mapping car, but the creators of the show recently found a new way to poke fun at the Redmond giant. A season 16 episode of Family Guy, titled “Three Directors,” pokes fun at the way Hollywood movies and TV shows sometimes feature product plugs like Microsoft’s Surface devices.

Told in the unique styles of three different famous film directors from Hollywood, the episode is mainly about telling the story of Peter getting fired from his job. In the ending portion of the episode, where Peter is the star in a Transformers-like film, his friend Joe Swanson pulls out a Microsoft Surface as part of the scene. Obviously intended to mock the way in which Hollywood movies and TV shows plug tech products, Joe holds up a Surface (complete with Microsoft logo) and remarks: “According to the calculations on my Microsoft Surface, they [the robots] have advanced cloaking technology. The Microsoft Surface confirms it. Microsoft Surface!”

Even if meant to mock the company, Microsoft obviously picked up some fun advertising in the scene. We got a few laughs out of it and must say that any mentions in pop culture are good publicity for Microsoft following the entire Consumer Reports fiasco which the company has been working hard to dismiss.
