For those of Eastern Asian descent, the most important occasion of the year – Lunar New Year – is fast approaching. Fitting in with the Year of the Monkey theme, Minecraft has joined in the festive atmosphere with a new skin pack, titled “Journey to the West”, announces the team on the Xbox Wire news page.
The skin pack takes the theme from the familiar Chinese fantasy epic of the same name, starring a colorful group of monks on a Westward journey to the land of Buddhism. Main characters include the Monkey King, Monk Pig, Friar Sand and a whole host of other heroes, gods and demons from Chinese folklore, almost all of which can be played by owners of the screen pack. The team has already put some suggestions on the page, like re-enacting the tale, creating an imperial city while donning the visage of the monkey god, or duke it out Asian Ragnarok-style (read: demons and gods battle royale.)
The screen pack is available for Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta in the Windows Store, and Minecraft: Pocket Edition on mobile platforms for $1.99.
If you haven’t already, you can get Minecraft, or Minecraft Pocket Edition, from the Windows Store:
