New Microsoft advisory will detail Chromium security updates for the new Edge browser

Microsoft has released a new security advisory support document that will provide users a record of all security updates for its Chromium-powered web browser that was released last month. Users of Microsoft’s new browser will be able to keep track of security batches, and see how fast vulnerabilities are patched especially when compared to its rival Google Chrome.

The advisory only lists one entry as of the time of this writing, listing four vulnerabilities identified by CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposured) which were patched on January 17. The listing documents the specific version of Edge that fixed the vulnerabilities (79.9.309.68), which is based on the Chromium version 79.0.3945.130.

As noted by ComputerWorld, Google released the same patch for Chromium on January 16, which is just one day before Edge received the same treatment from Microsoft, possibly suggesting that Redmond giant is looking to keep the gab between Chromium and Edge updates as slim as possible. Google’s update listing mentions eleven vulnerabilities that were patched, identifying only four of them by CVE. The CVE numbers listed also matched that of the Edge listing.

Still, Google has just released Chrome 80.0.3987.87, which provides as many as 56 vulnerability patches, 37 of which are CVE-identified. Microsoft still has yet to update Edge to the same version, although the company has made a commitment to provide regular updates to its Edge Stable branch every six weeks.
