Cuphead, the run and gun platform game with gorgeous vintage cartoons art style is one of the most exciting Xbox One/Windows exclusive titles to be released this year. The game was first shown three years ago during Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conference, and after a long wait gamers will finally be able to play it on September 29 with a simulatenous release on the Windows/Xbox Store and Steam.

The game is the first project by indie developer StudioMDHR Entertainment, and it won’t be released on Sony’s Playstation 4. Answering questions about the game on NeoGaf last week, the developers explained that the game will remain a Windows and Xbox One exclusive for now, though a Mac and Linux version could be released at some point (via Polygon):

Yes, this Cuphead game is exclusive to Xbox and PC (with Steam and Win10 versions at launch and a GoG release likely shortly after). There will likely be a Mac version down the road and possibly a Linux version beyond that (unless we lose our houses or whatever). We own the Cuphead IP.

Cuphead being a Xbox/Windows exclusive (the game will also support Xbox Play Anywhere if you purchase it from the Windows Store) is obviously a big win for Microsoft, though you may remind that indie games were clearly a big focus during Microsoft’s E3 2017 press briefing. We can’t really say the same about Sony, with Playstation boss Jim Ryan recently explaining to that indie games were “less relevant now.”

With no new Halo or Gears of War title in the pipeline this year, Microsoft really needed a more diverse lineup of games to conclude 2017, and we expect Cuphead to do really well this fall. Let us know in the comments if you can’t wait to play the game on your Xbox One or Windows PC.
