OneDrive will support Word, Excel, and PowerPoint templates; will they be available for free?

OneDrive templates will be introduced to the platform, starting February 2024, according to the latest entry in the Microsoft 365 Roadmap. They will be Word, Excel, and PowerPoint-based templates that the users can choose from to start working on projects directly within the platform.
We’re refreshing the file creation experience in OneDrive for Web which you initiate by clicking the “Add new” button. Soon, clicking the “Add new” button in OneDrive will give you the option to create a blank file or choose from a selection a high-quality, beautifully designed Word, Excel and PowerPoint templates to jumpstart your work.
Microsoft
The new feature is part of the plethora of new capabilities coming to OneDrive, as Microsoft promised they would back in October, when they announced a new UI for the platform, together with multiple enhancements.
Back then, the Redmond-based tech giant also promised it would focus on the integration of OneDrive with the other Microsoft 365, and it is happening as the platform now integrates with Microsoft Teams and Outlook.
This future feature shows that OneDrive will integrate even more Microsoft 365 apps, with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint being some of them. However, for those users who are not Microsoft 365 customers, but still use the limited OneDrive, are these templates going to be free?
OneDrive Templates: Free or not?
Yes, the templates coming with the new OneDrive update will be free, as far as the free OneDrive plan goes.
Currently, Microsoft has multiple plans for OneDrive, depending on the customer’s needs, that include a free plan that offers the following:
- 5 GB cloud storage
- Free versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
It’s safe to assume the new OneDrive templates will use the free versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to let users bring their projects to life.
Starting February 2024, users will be able to create free templates directly in OneDrive. It’s worth mentioning that it will only be available for OneDrive for Web.
