Power BI gets chat-based capabilities with Public Preview Copilot

Microsoft announced in a blog on the Power BI website that the Copilot pane in Power BI is now available in public preview in both view & edit mode and has new capabilities. You can now ask Copilot for insights, summaries, and answers from your report content.

Copilot in View mode and Edit mode

In view mode, with a few clicks, Copilot can

  • Get summaries of your report content.
  • Streamline the process and provide you with an overview to understand key trends, insights, and patterns.
  • Get an overview of their report page and ask questions about the data on the page.
  • Empowers you to dig deeper into their data.

All you need to do is start with the prompts like:

  • Create a bulleted list of insights
  • Summarize visuals on this page
  • Give an executive summary of this report
  • What are some key sales insights on this page?
  • What is the relationship between product type and revenue?

Copilot will scan the report page visuals and promptly answer the request in natural language, which will help you analyze the report in an easier manner

You can also copy & paste the replies by Copilot into your emails, Teams threads, or PowerPoint slides and share the summaries and insights of the report with everyone on your team.

To conclude, Copilot integration to Power BI can revolutionize how you handle your data. The intelligent and prompt AI assistant streamlines analysis, provides you with insights, and facilitates exploring and extracting meaningful information from the reports.

Furthermore, its real-time responsiveness to your questions provides an additional layer of interactivity, making the process more efficient.

This could be a transformative shift for Power BI users as it can change how they navigate and derive insights from their data.

Currently, no official date of release is mentioned for its general availability. Microsoft has also mentioned the support pages for creating reports and summarizing reports with the help of Copilot to facilitate people who want to use it.
